The sand in Porto Santo is said to be filled with unique minerals, and it is a fact that thousands of people visit that wonderful island every year, seeking relief from different affections. The sand appears to be made out of different materials including shells and volcanic stone that has been polished by the waves over countless years.
As the waves move, the weight and texture of these finely ground materials create beautiful patterns. It is the artist’s eye that recognizes and documents these works of art, before they disappear under the water as the tide sweeps them away.
These are the hidden secretes of Porto Santo, hidden from the vast majority as they go about their daily business or relax in one of the charming hotels in the immediate area. People are simply too busy to discover these hidden compositions and they are only available for a very limited time.
Some of them appear wonderous, others seem to actually rival masterpieces hanging in present day museums of modern art. And yet, they are here, waiting to be collected by those imaginative minds that are open enough to discover and collect them.
This act of discovery and documentation elevate these images into an art form.
As I walked around the island, I took hundreds of photos and this gallery shows a tiny selection of them. Images of these natural masterpieces can now be purchased, printed on aluminum diabond plate or canvas in a limited collector’s edition upon demand. Peter George Mahler is an Austrian – American artist currently living in Klagenfurt, Austria. For those of you thinking about the artist’s last name: Peter Mahler is, indeed, related to the famous Austrian composer Gustav Mahler.
After his teen age years in the United States, Mahler studied fine art at Vienna’s famous University of Applied Arts, graduating in 1981. Mahler has shown his art in countless exhibitions. Several of the more unique places where Mahler’s paintings were shown are: Haus Wittgenstein in Vienna (1999), the National Gallery for Foreign Art in Sophia (2000) and the Centro Cultural Pablo Ruiz Picasso in Torremolinos (2003). Mahler’s paintings can be found in both catalogs that were published accompanying those wonderful exhibitions organized by the Viennese Gallery SUR.
Mahler’s first works were paintings and drawings influenced by the Austrian Fantastic Realists. Many of these early paintings were done on wood, made in the oil and tempera layer technique of the old European masters.
But the academic technique that Mahler practiced was too slow, he needed a more immediate form of expression. This led to a creative “explosion” in his Viennese studio that gave birth to a series of large abstract expressionistic paintings, freeing the artist from his technical restraints.
The artist relates: “The floor and the ceiling were sprayed with paint, but I finally felt free”. Sometime after this, Mahler cast all academic principals away, painting with his bare hands on wooden panels.
After a series of works using cement (Gegenwärtsärchiologie) and Epoxy (Fetische der Gegenwart), Mahler turned to digital expression and created an innovative new style. Coined by the Viennese artist Prof Walter Sand, the name “Pixelismus” is used to describe this unique series of digital art work. In Mahler’s digital paintings, the pixel becomes the brush stroke of the impressionists and pointillists from the early 20th century.
Mahler’s pixels however, are corporeal, they cast shadows. Placed over each other in different layers, they turn Mahler’s digital art work into wonderful mosaic-like compositions. Printed in extremely low collector’s editions, these stunning images have found interest where ever they have been shown.
Recently, the 69-year-old artist came in contact with AI. Combining AI with digital retouching techniques, Mahler created a new series of images named “Strange New Worlds”, showing surreal environments filled with unique figures in stunning detail and brilliant light.
Mahler’s photos usually show small objects, details and textures found in landscapes and urban environments. A selection of his photographic images were published by the well known Austrian newspaper “die Presse”, and Mahler is often seen with his camera at different cultural events. The sand in Porto Santo is said to be filled with unique minerals, and it is a fact that thousands of people visit that wonderful island every year, seeking relief from different affections. The sand appears to be made out of different materials including shells and volcanic stone that has been polished by the waves over countless years.
As the waves move, the weight and texture of these finely ground materials create beautiful patterns. It is the artist’s eye that recognizes and documents these works of art, before they disappear under the water as the tide sweeps them away.
These are the hidden secretes of Porto Santo, hidden from the vast majority as they go about their daily business or relax in one of the charming hotels in the immediate area. People are simply too busy to discover these hidden compositions and they are only available for a very limited time.
Some of them appear wonderous, others seem to actually rival masterpieces hanging in present day museums of modern art. And yet, they are here, waiting to be collected by those imaginative minds that are open enough to discover and collect them.
This act of discovery and documentation elevate these images into an art form.
As I walked around the island, I took hundreds of photos and this gallery shows a tiny selection of them. Images of these natural masterpieces can now be purchased, printed on aluminum diabond plate or canvas in a limited collector’s edition upon demand.
